BECPAK

Power supply for RC-models / DC-DC converter / step down converter / buck converter

 

BEC stands for "Battery Eliminator Circuit" and is used in RC-models (Remote Controlled Models), e.g. RC-Cars, RC-Airplanes, RC-Ships, to eliminate the addiontional battery or accumulator for the RC-receiver and RC-servos.

In traditional BEC systems the power supply with a voltage of 5 Volt is supplied by a linear regulator (passiv design), which converts the power to dump the voltage from the main battery (assume 12V) to 5V by up to 2 Ampere current  into pure heat.
This results in a efficiency of 42% by 2 Amperes (5V*2A / 12V*2A). 
When higher input voltages are used the efficiency drops even deeper (21% by 24V/2A).

Here the power comes from an active DC/DC switching device, which results in much better efficiency (far less heat radiation).
